If you have experience as a caregiver, you can come to Canada through different programs in order to work temporarily or become a permanent resident.
Home Support Worker/Home Child Care Provider
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot are 5-year pilot programs that allow qualified caregivers and their family members to come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents. The application process will be different depending on your situation and whether you have no experience, some experience, or complete experience.
No Experience
- You don’t have any qualifying work experience
- You’ve never worked full-time as a caregiver in Canada

- You have some qualifying work experience, but less than 24 months

Complete Experience
- In the last 36 months, you’ve worked full-time as a caregiver in Canada for a total of 24 months or more

Live-In Caregiver
The Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) is for foreign nationals who wish to be employed by a Canadian citizen as a caretaker/nanny for their children or someone with disabilities in the home. After just two years of experience with the LCP work permit, foreign nationals are able to apply for permanent residence.
To be eligible for the live-in caregiver program, you must:
- Have a valid work permit, or have applied to extend your work permit, or have applied to restore your status as a worker in Canada
- Have work experience in Canada as either a Home Child Care provider or a Home Support Worker
- Have language scores equivalent to Canadian Languages Benchmark (CLB) 5 or NCLC (French language) 5 in all four areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Have a minimum of Canadian High School Diploma or the equivalent in a foreign diploma, certificate, or credential
